What is the creed? Who wrote it? What on earth is Future ACES? You will find out when YOU read THIS post.
So lets start with a little history. Future ACES started with Herb Carnegie. His family had moved from Jamaica to Canada and seven years later Herb was born! For more than 50 years, his primary objective has been to promote the use of Future Aces in elementary and secondary schools as the basis for positive initiatives utilized by teachers as an integral part of societal and citizenship education for students.
A family man, Dr. Carnegie was born in Toronto in 1919. He was married to Audrey May Carnegie in 1940 and had a loving partnership that lasted 63 years until her death in 2003. They had three daughters and a son, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. But before all of that all Herb wanted to do was play hockey. Him, his brother and their friends used to play hockey after school everyday. Since they couldn't afford real pucks they played with horse poop after it had frozen. Herbie as he was called was the best of the best in his team. Being one of only 3 black players on the team he was rejected by the NHL. He was the best and because of his skin colour he couldn't play with the best. He was heart broken! Crushed!!!
• Northern Ontario Senior Champions – 1940, 1941, 1942
• Quebec Provincial Hockey League Champions – 1945 -1946
• Voted most valuable player on the Sherbrooke Quebec Team – 1947, 1948, 1949
• Quebec Senior Champions – 1952
• Owen Sound OHA Senior Champions – 1954
• African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame - 2007
• Black Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame - 2006
• Senior Hockey Hall of Fame Immortal – (Career 1940 – 1954) – 2004
• Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame (for his contribution to Hockey) – 2001
• International Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame and Gallery (Detroit) – 1997
• Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame (Hockey Team) – 1997
He had won all these awards, he was the best of the best. But many believe that the unwritten code of the time denied him a tryout in the NHL because of race. That to me is unbelieveable!!
Herbert wrote the creed 1956 which is designed to help youth develop the self-knowledge and self-confidence that will enable them to take control of their lives and to use their abilities in a positive way. It provides a model for behaviour based on teachable skills with a meaningful message to encourage responsible citizenship. Its like a instructions on how to live your life, with plenty space for your own decisions.
Today it is used internationally in many schools as guidelines for student growth and development. Today I went to a hotel to view the future ACES presentations. First they gave us 'light refreshment' that meant a chocolate croissant and a giant chocolate muffin. After that We had Bernice Carnegie, daughter of Herbert Carnegie talk about being our own BOSS. Which stands for Best Opportunity for Striving Success. Her talk was only 10 minutes but after that we had Vivek Patel former victim of bullying speak. He shared his story of getting bullied and his success story about being a martial arts teacher, jewelery designer, dancer and drummer. 20 minutes later we were doing a meet and greet which meant. We went around and talked to 3 different people about their schools and hobbies. At 11:00 am 15 minutes after the meet and greet we had our first workshop. My school was separated and I had to attend the team building exercise. Here we had to ski with 2 two other people to build team skills and then play a game of she-reds. Then we had lunch AKA pizza, fruit salad, coke and various other drinks. We had another workshop about believing in goals then we went home after some quick activities.
